Part one
In St. Petersburg, on Gorokhovaya Street, on the same morning as always, Ilya Ilyich Oblomov is lying in bed - a young man of about thirty-two, not burdening himself with special activities. His lying is a certain way of life, a kind of protest against the prevailing conventions, because Ilya Ilyich so ardently, philosophically meaningfully objects to all attempts to lift him off the couch. Such is his servant, Zakhar, who does not find either surprise or displeasure, - he is used to living as his master: how he lives ...
This morning, visitors come to Oblomov one by one: on the first of May, the whole St. Petersburg world gathers in Yekaterinhof, and here friends try to push Ilya Ilyich, stir it up, forcing them to take part in a secular holiday celebration. But neither Volkov, nor Sudbinsky, nor Penkin succeed. Oblomov is trying to discuss his concerns with each of them - a letter from the headman from Oblomovka and a threatening move to another apartment; but nobody cares about the worries of Ilya Ilyich.
But I’m ready to tackle the problems of the lazy gentleman Mikhei Andreevich Tarantyev, the fellow countryman Oblomov, “a man of a brisk and cunning mind.” Knowing that after the death of his parents, Oblomov remained the sole heir to three hundred and fifty souls, Tarantyev did not mind attaching himself to a very tasty morsel, all the more so since he rightly suspects that the headman Oblomov is stealing and lying much more than is necessary within reasonable limits. But Oblomov is waiting for his childhood friend, Andrei Stoltz, who is the only one, in his opinion, able to help him understand economic difficulties.
At first, having arrived in St. Petersburg, Oblomov somehow tried to join the capital’s life, but gradually realized the futility of the efforts: neither he needed anyone, nor he was close. So Ilya Ilyich lay down on his sofa ... And the unusually devoted servant Zakhar, lying on his couch, did not lag behind his master in anything. He intuitively feels who can really help his master, and who, like Mikhey Andreyevich, only pretends to be a friend to Oblomov. But from a detailed, with mutual insults to clarify the relationship can save only a dream in which the gentleman plunges, while Zakhar goes to gossip and take his soul with neighboring servants.
Oblomov sees in a sweet dream his past, long gone life in his native Oblomovka, where there is nothing wild, grandiose, where everything breathes peace and a serene dream. Here they only eat, sleep, discuss the news, who come to this land very late; life flows smoothly, flowing from autumn to winter, from spring to summer, in order to again fulfill its eternal circles. Here, fairy tales are almost indistinguishable from real life, and dreams are a continuation of reality. Everything is peaceful, quiet, calm in this blessed land - no passions, no worries disturb the inhabitants of sleepy Oblomovka, among whom Ilya Ilyich’s childhood passed. This dream could have lasted, it seems, for ages, had it not been interrupted by the appearance of the long-awaited friend of Oblomov, Andrei Ivanovich Stoltz, whose arrival he joyfully announces to his master, Zakhar ...
Part two
Andrei Shtolts grew up in the village of Verkhlev, once a former part of Oblomovka; here his father now serves as steward. Stolz was formed into a personality, largely unusual, thanks to the double education received from a strong-willed, strong, cold-blooded German father and Russian mother, a sensitive woman who was forgotten from life's storms at the piano. Coeval of Oblomov, he is the exact opposite of his friend: “he is constantly on the move: it will take society to send an agent to Belgium or England - send him; if you need to write some project or adapt a new idea to the business - choose it. Meanwhile, he goes to the light and reads; when he has time, God knows. ”
The first thing Stolz starts with is pulling Oblomov out of bed and taking him to different houses. So begins a new life of Ilya Ilyich.
Stolz seems to pour part of his boiling energy into Oblomov, now Oblomov gets up in the morning and begins to write, read, take an interest in what is happening around him, and his acquaintances cannot be amazed: “Imagine, Oblomov has budged!” But Oblomov not only moved - his whole soul was shocked to the ground: Ilya Ilyich fell in love. Stolz introduced him to the Ilyinsky’s house, and in Oblomov a man awakens, endowed with unusually strong feelings by nature - listening to Olga singing, Ilya Ilyich is truly shocked, he finally woke up completely. But Olga and Stoltz, who had conceived a kind of experiment on the forever dormant Ilya Ilyich, did not have enough of this - it was necessary to awaken him to rational activity.
Meanwhile, Zakhar found his happiness - having married Anisya, a simple and kind woman, he suddenly realized that dust, dirt, and cockroaches should be fought, not put up with. In a short time, Anisya put in order the house of Ilya Ilyich, extending his authority not only to the kitchen, as was originally assumed, but throughout the house.
But this general awakening did not last long: the very first obstacle, moving from the dacha to the city, gradually turned into that swamp that sucks in slowly but steadily Ilya Ilyich Oblomov, not adapted to decision-making, to the initiative. A long life in a dream cannot end right away ...
Olga, feeling her power over Oblomov, too much in him is not able to understand.
Part three
Yielding to Tarantyev’s intrigues at the moment when Stoltz again left Petersburg, Oblomov moved to the apartment Vyborgsky hired by him Mikhey Andreevich.
Unable to struggle with life, not knowing how to manage his debts, not knowing how to manage his estate and expose the crooks surrounding him, Oblomov ends up in the house of Agafya Matveevna Pshenitsyna, whose brother, Ivan Matveevich Mukhoyarov, is friends with Mikhey Andreyevich, not inferior to him, but rather surpassing him the latter by cunning and guile. In the house of Agafya Matveevna before Oblomov, first imperceptibly, and then more and more distinctly, the atmosphere of his native Oblomovka unfolds, which is what Ilya Ilyich cherishes most in his soul.
Gradually, the entire economy of Oblomov passes into the hands of Pshenitsyna. A simple, ingenuous woman, she begins to manage Oblomov’s house, preparing tasty dishes for him, arranging his life, and again the soul of Ilya Ilyich plunges into a sweet dream. Although sometimes the peace and serenity of this dream explode in meetings with Olga Ilyinskaya, who is gradually disappointed in her chosen one. Rumors about the wedding of Oblomov and Olga Ilyinskaya are already scurrying between the servants of the two houses - after learning about this, Ilya Ilyich is horrified: nothing else, in his opinion, has been decided, and people are already transferring conversations from house to house about which, most likely will never happen. “That's all Andrei: he instilled love, like smallpox, on both of us. And what kind of life, all the excitement and anxiety! When will there be peaceful happiness, peace? ” Oblomov thinks, realizing that everything that happens to him is nothing more than the last convulsions of a living soul, ready for a final, already uninterrupted sleep.
Days flow by days, now Olga, unable to stand it, herself comes to Ilya Ilyich on the Vyborg side. He comes to make sure that nothing will awaken Oblomov from a slow immersion in a final dream. Meanwhile, Ivan Matveevich Mukhoyarov takes over Oblomov’s case by estate, thoroughly and deeply confusing Ilya Ilyich in his clever frauds that the owner of the blessed Oblomovka can hardly get out of them. And at that moment, Agafya Matveevna was also repairing Oblomov’s dressing gown, which, it seemed, could not be repaired by anyone. This becomes the last straw in the throes of the resistance of Ilya Ilyich - he falls ill with fever.
Part four
A year after Oblomov’s illness, life flowed in its measured direction: the seasons changed, Agafya Matveevna prepared delicious dishes for the holidays, baked Oblomov’s cakes, made coffee for him, celebrated Ilyin with enthusiasm ... And suddenly Agafya Matveevna realized that she fell in love gentleman. She became so loyal to him that at the moment when Andrei Shtolts, who came to St. Petersburg on the Vyborg side, exposes the dark affairs of Mukhoyarov, Pshenitsyna renounces her brother, whom she had only recently revered and was even afraid of.
Surviving the disappointment in her first love, Olga Ilyinskaya gradually gets used to Stolz, realizing that her attitude to him is much more than just friendship. And Olga responds to Stolz’s proposal with consent ...
And a few years later, Stolz reappears on the Vyborg side. He finds Ilya Ilyich, who has become “a complete and natural reflection and expression‹ ... ›of peace, contentment, and serene silence. Peering, reflecting on his life and getting more and more settled in it, he finally decided that he had nowhere else to go, nothing to look for ... ". Oblomov found his quiet happiness with Agafya Matveevna, who gave birth to his son Andryusha. The arrival of Stolz does not bother Oblomov: he asks his old friend not to leave Andryusha ...
And five years later, when Oblomov was no more, the house of Agafya Matveevna dilapidated, and the wife of the bankrupt Mukhoyarov, Irina Panteleevna, began to play the first role in it. Andryusha was asked for the education of the Stolts. Living in memory of the late Oblomov, Agafya Matveevna focused all her feelings on her son: “she realized that she had lost and her life shone, that God had put a soul into her life and took it out again; that the sun shone in her and faded forever ... "And a high memory forever connected her with Andrei and Olga Stoltsy -" the memory of the soul of a dead man, pure as crystal, ”.
And faithful Zakhar in the same place, on the Vyborg side, where he lived with his master, now asks for alms ...
