: An information coding specialist is able to be in several consciousnesses, which has become a threat to his real existence: the real world can disappear for him forever.
The novel is an alternation of two storylines through a chapter: “Wonderland without brakes” and “End of the World”. In the course of events, it becomes clear that both lines are interconnected. In both parts, the narration is from the first person.
The protagonist of the "Wonderland" section, a 35-year-old man, a neuro-converter (a specialist in processing and encrypting data through subconscious actions), comes to the next task. He is met by a 17-year-old fat girl dressed in all pink.
The laboratory of her grandfather, a professor, is in the dungeon. The professor tells the converter, an employee of the System, that he must perform the encoding of information (shuffling). The data is extremely important: they should not get to the crackers (competitors of the System) or gills (underground creatures dangerous to humans).
The hero of Doomsday ends up in the City. The City Guard appoints him the Reader of Dreams from animal skulls in the Library. A librarian will help him.
The hero does not remember which country he came from. Before entering the City, the Sentinel cut off his shadow: you cannot enter the City with her.
Having slept well, the converter looked at the professor’s gift handed over by his granddaughter before he left. It was a skull and tongs to test its sound. The man decided to find out more about the skull and went to the library with a request for books about mammals. The long-haired librarian gives him books and talks about unicorns.
The converter had a special operation for the possibility of shuffling, now it has a unique coding skill. A man finishes work on the assignment of a professor.
The hero manages to see the shadow. She asks to make a map of the City - the shadow will figure out how to escape. The guard says that there is no way out of here: “No one can get out of here ... But then deliverance will come. And all the suffering, all the heavy thoughts will go away ... Forget your Shadow. Here is the End of the World. ”
Winter is coming. The Colonel says that the shadow of the Librarian died, and she lost her "I".
In the winter morning, the hero watches the animals die. The Sentinels burn their corpses and stuff their skulls with old dreams.
The hero asks the girl from the library to talk about her mother. Mom was not like all people in the City: she did not forget her "I" and went to the Forest.
Two broke into the converter’s apartment: Shorty and Verzila. They need the details of the professor’s study, and the man is ordered to keep them informed. Verzila killed almost everything in the apartment, and Shorty made an incision on the stomach of the converter.
In the evening, the converter was awakened by a fat woman in pink.
The fat woman declares that it is necessary to find the grandfather, otherwise the end of the world will come. The converter guesses that the professor was developing a shuffling theory using his brain as an example. And the most interesting thing is that his shuffling password is “End of the World”.
They set off to look for the old man in a cave - in the Sanctuary of the gills, where the creatures do not enter.
The professor, who was found in the Sanctuary, tells the converter about the disastrous consequences of his experiments on encoding with people. Of the twenty-six people, only the converter remained alive. All of them had shuffling in their brain. The surviving converter, according to the professor, has "the ability to be in several minds at once." In his brain there is a jumper between these consciousnesses. In one of them there is a world created by the converter itself. This is the so-called city. "The human" I "is controlled by animals," unicorns. Seeing the city in a neuro-film of a man’s consciousness, the professor created a donated model of a unicorn skull.
After 29 hours, the premise will burn, and the man will forever be stuck in the world he invented - the End of the World.
The converter and the bbw are selected to the surface via the subway. He decides to spend the last hours of life with a girl. In the evening, a man dines with the Librarian in an Italian restaurant.
The shadow of the hero is weakening. She received a map of the City and is looking for a way out.
The hero and the Librarian take an accordion from the Young Caretaker at the Power Station.
The shadow has completely weakened. She offers to run. But the hero loves the Librarian and wants to stay in the City. Shadow warns that people like him, who have not completely killed their shadows, are sent to the Forest. And the girl will not be allowed to go there - she does not remember her "I". This "I" is taken out by animals for the City, and when they die, the human "I" remains in their turtles.
The converter stays overnight at the Librarian. A man shows her a skull. In the evening they listen to “Danny Boy” by Bing Crosby.
The librarian woke the converter in the middle of the night. The skull flickered with a bright glow. In turn, they touched the skull with their fingers, and both had the feeling that this had already happened.
A man calls to his home. The bbw picks up the phone. She had already rescued her grandfather and returned to read Balzac. The girl offers to freeze the body of the converter: maybe there is a way to revive his real consciousness. He says that it will be possible to find his body in the port: he goes there.
The hero is trying to pick up the Song on the accordion. “I can never stay in the City. And yet I ... love him. " Finally he manages to pick up a passage of the melody. This is Danny Boy. He thinks the memory of the Librarian is in this Song.
Yet he goes to the shadows. Together they get to Omut - exit from the City. Both already know that the City was created by the hero himself and that the hero will never lose his "I". The hero observes how the shadow plunges into Omut, and after that he returns to the City.
