Oh, these Russian writers! First they say that “brevity is the sister of talent”, and then epic novels come out from the pen of recognized masters. Of course, each author has his own view on the pedigree of the literary gift, some writers think that the large size gives solidity to the creation, but, rightly, the modern reader is such a burden. Therefore, the Literaguru team prepared a short retelling of the book Quiet Flows the Don.
Part four
Chapter 1. October 1916 Officer's dugout. It includes Bunchuk. He calls the sleeping Listnitsky to play chess. Soon came Esaul Kalmykov and the centurion Chubov, the first reports that the regiment is going to shoot. Everyone enjoys at least some activity, but Bunchuk is sure that the Cossacks are reserved in case of unrest at the front. Listnitsky argues with his position as an adversary of the war; he is surprised at such “subjects” in the officer community. But some officers agree with Bunchuk that without shocks Russia will not leave the war. And he expresses his Bolshevik views. He himself went to the front to acquire the necessary experience in the future. He reads journalism on this subject from the collection of Lenin. But reading is interrupted by a messenger from the headquarters. Officers diverge. Bunchuk is going (apparently far away, as he takes cartridges and canned goods). After leaving, Listnitsky and Merkulov discuss it. The first answers vaguely, but he himself has already written a denunciation, which he soon sends out. And the next morning they learned that Bunchuk had deserted.
Chapter 2 Listniki brought proclamations against the king and the war found in the trenches. An angry officer orders a search of all soldiers and officers, especially machine gunners, who are most suspicious. A search of the Cossacks yielded nothing. The mood among them was joyless, I didn’t feel like fighting at all, even the songs were joyless, and the soldiers were ready to go anywhere except for the battle, even for Cossack bayonets. Meanwhile, the deserter Bunchuk arrived in a trading place, where he came to a certain Boris Ivanovich with a request to settle him in a room. He agrees, but soon Bunchuk will have to transfer to another place on a party assignment.
Chapter 3 A bloody battle took place near the village of Piggy. After him, new units poured into the troops, among them were Cossacks-third-priority from the Tatar farm. So Ivan Alekseevich met with Valet (both went to Shtokman). They talk about their mentor (Shtokman sits in Siberia). Jack in a depressed state, he thinks that they will not meet again. As the offensive comes across, the wounded and the dead. The sight of the latter instills in the Cossacks pity and rejection of the war. But the offensive of the Russian troops ended, because the enemy used suffocating gases and began to crowd out the Russians. The consequences of such poisoning were seen by the unit, which included Jack. The killed was truly scary. Later, the poisoned began to come across more often, and Jack and a friend went to look in the dugouts for food. Jack saw the Germans there, did not take them prisoner, released them. At this time, the headquarters received an order to advance and repulse the first line of trenches. After the “liquid preparation”, the Cossacks went forward. Ivan Alekseevich was met by a colleague who went crazy and sang songs near the enemy. The madman was hardly taken to a safe place.
Chapter 4 One night, Grigory Melekhov recalls a peaceful life. First, Aksinya comes to mind, then I remember being at home: the caresses of the wife, the honor of the family. All this replaced socialist ideas from the hero’s head, replacing them with Cossack ones, he returned to the front with a “good Cossack”. Then I recall battles and killings on the battlefield. In one of the battles, Gregory saved Stepan. Astakhov lost his horse, and then was wounded, Melekhov even put him on his horse. Having left for a safe place, Stepan admitted that he shot at Gregory three times. They part without a truce. In his memoirs, Melekhov could wander for a long time, he fell asleep, remembering a peaceful life, from which he woke up with a longing in his heart. This was noticed by Chubaty, with whom Gregory lived in the same dugout. He began to treat Melekhov with respect. But socialist ideas are not close to Chubatom, he says that the Cossacks need their own power. One day they brought soup with spoiled meat. Gregory even noticed worms there. Melekhov, Chubaty and Kosheva carried cabbage soup to the hundredth, who promised to figure it out. But I had to understand on the way, a hundred were transferred to the aid of the Romanian troops. The conditions on the road were difficult; there was nothing for either people or horses. Chubaty stole barley for a horse from a resident and did not give it away even under pain of death. They arrived at the position in early November. Before one of the fights, Gregory was nervous; the ever-present calm left him. And not in vain worried: the first volley knocked him down. The Cossacks are retreating, Mishka Kosheva is angry at the very fact of the war, Chubaty reminds him of the oath.
Chapter 5 The war affected the Tatar farm by neglect on the farm. The Melekhovs had better, but Pantelei Prokofievich’s hands didn’t reach everything. But Natalya had twins. She endured pregnancy difficultly, but she endured everything steadily, did not ask anyone to take care of herself, gave birth not at home, but in the field. Rare letters came from Gregory and Peter. The brothers parted ways: the eldest went uphill, received ranks and privileges. From the younger war sucked all the juices. Only one thing overshadowed the happiness of Peter - there were rumors about the immoral behavior of Daria, especially Stepan, who had a good time with her on vacation, stood out. Enmity reigned between the Cossacks, which would have reached even blood if Astakhov had not been captured. And Daria walked frantically, once even the gate was removed from the yard, which Pantelei Prokofievich saw. He talked with the daughter-in-law and even hit her, she promised revenge. Once, Daria and her father-in-law together carried a fan. She began to pester him. She responded to the shocked refusal that she could not be judged because she could not live without a Cossack.
Chapter 6 Pantelei Prokofievich owed money to Mokhov, for a long time he could not give, so he soon received a judicial decision. I decided to borrow from the matchmaker Korshunov, in whose family there was joy - the son of Mitka came on vacation. The servant has changed externally and internally, aged. Miron Grigorievich gave money. Mitka spent the nights with the wife of the Cossack Anikushka, and tried to approach Daria, but Ilyinichna persuaded him. As the days passed, Grigory was to arrive soon.
Chapter 7 The merchant Mokhov suspected that change was coming. The Cossacks met the February revolution with alarm. They did not quite understand what had happened. Mokhov tried to explain to them, but his thoughts are incoherent, he is anxiously waiting for what will happen next. He bitterly turns back on his life: he spent time dishonestly making money, the children are now strangers and distant, he recalls cases of oppression of poor people. In the morning, the merchant is going to go to the landowner Listnitsky, to whom his son came from the front, to learn about the current state of affairs. On the way, he sees teacher Balanda speaking, telling the Cossacks about the upcoming bright life. Eugene talks about the decomposition of the army, the soldiers and even the Cossacks are tired of fighting and no longer want this. At this time, in another room, Aksinya, who still serves with Listnitsky, asked about the farm, including Grigory Melekhov. The news was sad for her.
Chapter 8 The army received the news with hope, but the war had to continue, which was a big minus for the soldiers and Cossacks. In one of the wagons, among the soldiers being transported, six Tatars lived, they spoke of terrible prophecies regarding the future. Cossacks are tired of fighting, they cannot wait for the end of hostilities. Soon, at the other end, they sang, then the Cossacks began to dance. Anikushka fell into the fire, burned harem pants.
Chapter 9 After unloading, the commander called Peter. Caught the deserter. It was a friend of Melekhov, Jacob Fomin. Peter speaks to him, the fugitive admits that he became completely unbearable. So the meeting ended, but there was another ahead. Petra came to visit Daria, he forgot about his intention to beat her, she did not remember the betrayals (even the one that happened on the way to her husband).
Chapter 10 After the vacation, Listnitsky was assigned to a new regiment (he had fled from the past even before the February coup, fearing the revenge of the soldiers). Regiment officers were monarchistically tuned. For some time they were not transferred anywhere, but then sent to Petrograd. At a future apartment, someone drew a symbol of the oprichnina, which angered Listnitsky. He also orders additional doors to the stable, and then indulges in rest. However, for a short time - they called to the regiment commander. Everything was calm in the city, and recent events seemed strange to Liznitsky. He looks at the merchants and the rich walking along the street, feels alienation to them, although he realizes that he is actually with them. Listniksky himself would have given everything for restoring the old order, but would others have done so? The regiment commander sends him to Kerensky, whom Eugene cannot hear about.
Chapter 11 General Kornilov became commander in chief. This news was greeted with joy among the officers and cool among the soldiers. Kornilov proposed decisive measures to increase discipline up to the military field courts. Officers of the regiment in which Listnitsky serves discuss the situation, deciding who they are with, all for the new general. However, the Cossacks themselves have a different position: they do not want to fight. Officers believe that they must convince the Cossacks, as well as exterminate all the Bolsheviks. At this informal meeting ended, everyone dispersed. A fellow worker of Atarschikov expresses his thoughts on Bolshevism to Listnitsky, but he does not show due attention, from which he himself suffers.
Chapter 12 Cossack Lagutin served under Listnitsky’s leadership, who was suspected of sympathizing with the Bolsheviks and conducting subversive work. Eugene decided to get to know him better. He speaks with the Cossack, trying to instill in him the idea that the Bolsheviks will lead Russia to death. Gradually, both begin to get angry. A skirmish is interrupted by an incident: a man throws stones at a soldier. Listnitsky orders him to be beaten with whips, Lagutin asks to note the order, convinces him and the executors of the order with the powers of the military revolutionary committee. For this, Listnitsky nearly killed the intercessor. When the anger subsided, Eugene realized his mistake. After a while, Listnitsky went to dine with Atarschikov. There they met former colleagues of Eugene, Kalmykov and Chubov. They say that in St. Petersburg it is believed that Kornilov will soon come to power, and the Cossack units are his support.
Chapter 13 A conversation between Kornilov and Lukomsky is taking place at the main front headquarters. The latter suspects that the former decided not to go to the Germans, but to Petersburg. Kornilov talks about the plan to come to power, Lukomsky supports him.
Chapter 14. Listnitsky arrived with a special assignment to Kornilov. He is present at the meeting of the commander in chief at the station. He is greeted with enthusiasm, and Eugene pervades them. And in Moscow, where Kornilov is leaving, he meets with Kaledin, where they agree on a future performance in Petersburg.
Chapter 15 At the front, a hundred were replaced, in which Ivan Alekseevich served, and sent to Petrograd to suppress the riots. Cossacks are unhappy with this. Ivan Alekseevich decided not to allow a hundred to go to Petrograd. He gives the order to be unloaded. Ivan Alekseevich responds with a refusal to proposals for negotiations.
Chapter 16. Kornilov realized that the coup case had failed. The troops do not have time to pull off, support is not enough.
Chapter 17 Part-supporters of Kornilov walked slowly due to the opposition of railway workers and workers. Bunchuk, who had deserted earlier, approached the Cossack hundred. He tells the former colleagues about what is happening in Petrograd, convinces them not to go there. There are even rumors among the Cossacks that Lenin is a Cossack. The conversation was long, Bunchuk stayed to spend the night, at night he thinks about how it would be better to direct the riot. The next morning, he agrees with the committee of railway workers: the train will not be released for sure. On the way back, the hero meets Kalmykov. Their conversation cannot be called friendly, the officer calls the interlocutor a traitor. Soon Kalmykov reads the appeal of Kornilov to the Cossacks. Bunchuk on behalf of the Petrograd workers asks the Cossacks not to go. The rally begins, the Cossacks speak. And Kalmykov begins active actions: removes machine guns and collects devoted Cossacks. Bunchuk arrests the commander, who showers him with curses. The furious revolutionary shot the enemy.
Chapter 18. General Krymov shot himself. The troops he brought were at a loss. General Alekseev was appointed commander in chief, he agreed out of a desire to ease the fate of Kornilov and his supporters. And those were arrested.
Chapter 19. One hundred Listnitsky was summoned to the Palace Square. There were already some units, including a women's strike battalion. They were preparing for something, but no one understood what it was for. They only knew that the Bolsheviks were supposed to perform. So far, they stood aimlessly, suffering from hunger. The Cossacks would like to leave, but worry that potential opponents will let them go. Here representatives of the revolutionary committee just come and convince that they will not do anything against the Cossacks if they leave. They do so, Atarschikov tries to leave with them, but the remaining officers shot him.
Chapter 20. Kornilov and his supporters waited a month and a half for trial, all this time they were imprisoned in a female gymnasium. Kornilov also tried to maintain the number of his supporters there. The October Revolution shook the ground under the prisoners. The headquarters did not have any more rights, nor could it release. But the Headquarters surrendered without a fight, Kornilov decided to free himself and try to launch an offensive.
Chapter 21 And on the front of World War I there was a retreat. One day, Mishka Kosheva and Alexei Beshnyak were in intelligence. Sitting in an ambush, Kosheva discusses the unnecessary nature of war. Then the Germans took them. Alexei was killed, Koshevoy was captured, but he was able to escape. The regiment, where Mikhail served, was transferred to the rear, carried out barrage service (counteracted desertion). Kosheva got into the first outfit. Three ragged and dirty soldiers who were clearly deserters came across. Desperate people almost began to shoot at the Cossacks. But then the conversation went more peacefully, the soldiers persuade them to skip, are ready to give the last for this. Bear took pity on the soldiers, persuaded to let them pass just like that. Cossacks give them advice on how not to get caught. The front collapses after the news of the October Revolution. The regiment with the Tatars in the composition also goes home
Part five
Chapter 1. In the late autumn of 1917, the Cossacks began to return home. And houses where warriors did not return were filled with sorrow. The Don Civil War broke out.
Chapter 2 After the October Revolution, Grigory Melekhov was the commander of hundreds. A turning point in the hero’s worldview occurred after meeting Yefim Izvarin, who advocated Don’s autonomy. This man was perfectly able to explain all his theories and thoughts. Gregory could not choose the side. Izvarin introduced him to Podtelkov, who made a pleasant impression on Melekhov, their communication immediately became free. Podtelkov was in Bolshevik positions, he believed that elective power was needed. Gregory thought.
Chapter 3 In Novocherkassk, all the counter-revolutionaries gathered. Kaledin was able to make of them the troops of the Volunteer Army.
Chapter 4 Bunchuk arrived in Novocherkassk, came to his parental home, desolate and deserted. He could hardly recognize his aged mother, who immediately surrounded him with care. But the son did not stay long, a day later Bunchuk was summoned to Rostov. There he came to Abramson, who should direct him somewhere. The latter instructs to organize a machine gun team, then arranges for an apartment.
Chapter 5 Anna Pogudko is sent to the machine gun team. She wanted to be a machine gunner, her requests were conceded. Future machine gunners learned everything easily, except for the baker Gevorgyants. Anna asked everything with curiosity. To her, he had some kind of exciting feelings, which he tried to hide behind the stressed coldness and exactingness. One day, he escorts her home, from a conversation with Anna it is warming in her soul, but it's not only that she is good, Bunchuk fell in love.
Chapter 6 A battle took place near Rostov, in which many Red Army soldiers received baptism of fire. Bunchuk watched the machine guns and his charges. He helps them: either he will set the sight, then he will pull out the stuck bullet. Bunchuk is also watching Anna, who was in a state of shock and fear. At one point, she tells him that she can no longer, Bunchuk supports the girl. The attack was repelled. And in the evening Bunchuk wrapped Anna in an overcoat and tried to inspire her with firmness.
Chapter 7 After long battles near Rostov, the Red Army retreated. It was doubly difficult for Bunchuk because he got typhus. With such an ailment it is extremely difficult to travel in a marching order. He was supported along the way by Anna and another colleague of Krutogorov.
Chapter 8 In the courtyard of Miron Grigoryevich, work is in full swing: he himself examined the hay, and the son of Mitka was cleaning the cow bases. Then Khristonya and Ivan Alekseevich came to say that they were all chosen by lot by delegates to the congress of front-line soldiers, but Korshunov categorically refused to go. Hristona and Ivan Alekseevich had to go alone. At the congress, they met Grigory Melekhov, who was delighted with him and began to question about household chores. Various speakers speak at the congress, who are well able to convince and make strong speeches. Gregory did not wait for the end of the meeting, he was summoned to headquarters. He asked Ivan Alekseevich and Khristonya to tell about the results, but only the first came to him, the second went to arrest the authorities, even was wounded.
Chapter 9 Meetings and rallies alternated with fights, the situation on the Don was turbulent.
Chapter 10 Selected at the congress went to Novocherkassk to meet with representatives of the Don government. There, their Bolshevik views met with hatred. The delegates brought with them an ultimatum on the transfer of power to the military revolutionary committee. After almost useless debate, it became known that the Government would give an answer the next day.
Chapter 11 The government refused to fulfill the requirements of the ultimatum, demanded the dissolution of the military revolutionary committee.
Chapter 12 Izvarin left the regiment, he is talking with Gregory, condemning him for his commitment to the red troops. Then Melekhov meets a familiar Cossack who reports that he saw Listnitsky. Since that time, Gregory yearned, more and more often recalled Axinho. When Melekhov went to check the outposts, he met with Podtelkov, noticed that there were new notes of arrogance. Arriving back at the apartment, Gregory quarreled with the owner. Later he hears the conversation of the Cossacks with whom he lives. They condemn the participation of "men" in the uprising, gravitating towards the creation of Cossack autonomy. The next day, the units fled from Glubokaya in disarray, hundreds of Gregory did not listen to him. But then the troops perked up and went back. Gregory was hurt. The losing detachment of Chernetsov was captured, the commander Golubov passed through Melekhov, which takes Chernetsov on bail. But Podtelkov refuses, he believes that prisoners should be judged. But there was no court, they simply dealt with the officers.
Chapter 13 Gregory slightly healed his leg in the infirmary and went to be treated home. Pantelei Prokofievich argued with him on the topic of politics, and even his son had doubts about the correctness of the chosen path after the reprisal with the prisoners. Gregory is glad to see his native places, his father takes him through the farm to boast. But the joyful impression was blurred by the fact that Pantelei Prokofievich crushed the piglet and began to curse his mistress. Finally arrived home. He was greeted with love and joy. Little has changed at home. Natalya dressed up for the arrival of her husband, he admired his wife. Gregory brought gifts to the family. Then he tells his father and Peter about the situation at the front.
Chapter 14. In the morning they did not begin to wake Gregory. He slept, dressed smartly, shaved and washed. Next was a festive dinner, during which Peter fooled around with Mishatka, the son of Gregory. After lunch, Pantelei Prokofievich went to Veshenskaya to fix the clamps. On the way back he drove to the godmother. They talk about news, including political news (Kaledin shot himself, the Bolsheviks are pushing). Then they start to drink alcohol. Only in the evening Pantelei Prokofievich came to his senses. So he drove into the wormwood, the cart and horse drowned.
Chapter 15 Success in hostilities was on the side of the Bolsheviks. The volunteer army retreats, representatives of the top resign themselves. Kaledin shot himself.
Chapter 16. Ilya Bunchuk saw Anna first when he woke up. It turned out that the girl was left with him alone and looked after him. And it was not easy. Ilya returned his appetite, he constantly wanted to eat, but Anna did not give more than normal, following the advice of a doctor. Once she just could not stand the requests and reproaches, gave a whole plate of pies. Bunchuk was even ashamed. Soon he began to walk uncertainly. Anna herself called the care of her favorite test of feelings, which she was able to overcome.
Chapter 17 Anna and Ilya come to Millerovo. She was soon summoned to Lugansk for campaign work, Bunchuk was not happy with this. She is actively going, but secretly no longer happy to leave Ilya.
Chapter 18. After the death of Kaledin, the Small Military Circle began to work. But he worked sluggishly, because the end of the rebel movement was obvious and close, the Volunteer Army was retreating. It was hard to walk, especially the cold. Those who walked remembered the house, and Listnitsky also recalled, filling with hatred of the Bolsheviks and hoping that Kornilov would still lead them to victory. And at this time the council of the Volunteer Army is passing, on which the plan is expressed - to go to the Kuban. About this Kornilov says General Popov, commander of the Don army. He does not agree to enter foreign territory, saying that the thaw will begin soon, and also the Cossacks may refuse to speak. Kornilov does not agree with this, seeking support from the authoritative General Alekseev. He advocates a trip to the Kuban. Lukomsky spoke out against the nomination for Don. Following the meeting, it was decided to speak nevertheless.
Chapter 19. Golubov’s detachment went to take Novocherkassk. Bunchuk also rode with him. On this day there was a meeting of the Small Military Circle, the detachment went to arrest its representatives. After the successful outcome, Bunchuk’s efforts were aimed at finding Anna. Finally, they met, rejoiced at each other. The heroine called Elijah to live with her. Her family consisted of a mother and sister. The guest was assigned a separate room.
Chapter 20. Bunchuk was sent to work in a revolutionary tribunal; he shot people. Within a week it turned black and dried, after returning from work, it fell. Anna persuaded him to leave from there. Ilya believed that his work brings tangible benefits. It was only a pity for him that the workers had to be shot. But Bunchuk was still transferred to the district. And not in vain, the work robbed him of everything. But they still didn’t send to the province, there were many cases in Rostov.
Chapter 21 A detachment of Reds entered the Setrakov farm, atrocities, robbed, shot and raped the Cossacks. By night, everyone had drunk, the farmers attacked insensitive reds, killed and captured. Since that time, the upper villages have ceased to recognize Soviet power.
Chapter 22. Spring has begun. Once Mishka Kosheva went fishing and met Valeta, who says that under Migulinskaya the uprising against the Bolsheviks, it means that everyone who is for the Reds must leave the farm. Ivan Alekseevich had a Council of Cossacks on this occasion, it was attended by Jack, Kosheva, Grigory Melekhov, Khristonya. Jack claims to leave soon. Gregory replies that you can’t leave a family. They swear, Jack goes. Ivan Alekseevich and Khristonya support Gregory, and Mishka - Valeta, is also going to leave. Kosheva doesn’t take anything with herself, she just goes near the mistress’s house, looking at her goodbye.
Chapter 23. After Mishka left, the Cossacks were silent, realizing that the family is an excuse, in fact they simply do not want to go. Ivan Alekseevich decided to himself that he would leave at the first opportunity, but he did not trust this thought to Gregory and Christona, considering them dangerous. The Maidan of the Cossacks did not give them a full discussion of their decision, at which they proposed to restore autonomy. When they began to read the decree, Gregory went home, but he was asked to return. The proposal was accepted by a majority vote, Miron G. was appointed ataman. Gregory was offered the squad leader, but the old men gave him a challenge, and Peter was appointed to command. They argued so much about it that some even got into a fight. Then they began to record hunters in the detachment, the front-line soldiers did not particularly want to, but recorded voluntarily-forcibly.
Chapter 24. A detachment of the Tatarsky farm arrived in the village of Karginsky, Peter went to the apartment of the village ataman Fyodor Likhovidov. Ataman was distinguished by a sharp temper, impeccably trained the Cossacks. He told Peter that it was still possible to cope without them, but there were very few fighters from a large farm. The war was postponed. But not for long. By Easter the order came to immediately equip the Cossacks in order to oppose the units of Podtelkov. Blood poured on the Don.
Chapter 25. The battle for Bunchuk began unsuccessfully: he lost his license plate, the Red Guards were crowded out. But the worst thing is that Anna alone led the detachment on the offensive and was mortally wounded. She died in his arms.
Chapter 26. Bunchuk lived in delirium, indifferent to everything. He was sent to the northern districts as part of a campaign expedition. The road was hard, it’s difficult to drive. The leader of the expedition, Podtelkov, suggested marching. Despite the dangers of the path (white could capture), we decided to move that way. The mood in the detachment is not the saddest: lively conversations, jokes. One Bunchuk is in the same prostration, the image of Anna is relentless with him.
Chapter 27. In Ukrainian settlements they were welcomed, but horses were reluctantly given. The further they went, the more hostile the population was towards them. There was no talk of any agitation. Podtelkov rushed to go, cutting stops. He consulted with Lagutin whether they would receive support in the north. He feared that an uprising had begun there. And this was confirmed by the shepherd questioned by him, an ataman was chosen in his farm, and a rumor was circulating throughout the farms that Podtelkov was going to cut everyone. In the following farmsteads, residents began to scatter; rebels were already ahead. We decided to return.
Chapter 28. Within the delegation there is corruption, many agitators themselves do not want to do anything, even to defend themselves. Nevertheless, they were caught on one farm, most of them forced Podtelkov to enter into negotiations. Among the Cossacks who arrived there were friends of the delegation members, they spoke amiably with each other. But the authorities of the arriving patrol were not so friendly, they drove off the delegation and forced them to surrender their weapons. Podtelkov gave such an order, hoping for the best. The disarmed delegation was driven to judge on another farm, and beaten on the way. The court decided in the morning to shoot everyone, and hang Podtelkov and Krivoshlykov.
Chapter 29. The prisoners did not sleep that night. Podtalkov and Krivoshlykov retain hardness. The prisoners talked about everything that was left in this world.
Chapter 30. A detachment from the Tatar farm was late to catch Podtelkov, they are offered to execute the sentence. Peter refuses for everyone, but several hunters are located. Convicted are brought. Podtelkov and Krivoshlykov are asked to hang them after to support their comrades. Some of the squad are really cowardly. Podtelkov notices Grigory Melekhov, accuses him of being overstepped, and he recalls the reprisal against officers. Christony leads Melekhov to the horses. After the execution they proceed to hanging. In parting, Podtelkov made a strong speech that the cause of the revolution still could not be stopped. Not immediately it turned out to deal with them, the rope was long. But, in the end, everyone was executed.
Chapter 31. The Cossacks overtook the Bear of Koshevoy and Valeta. The latter was killed, and Koshevoy was decided to be "cured" of Bolshevism. He was punished with rods and sent to the front.
