(267 words) In 1920, E.I. Zamyatin wrote the actual novel “We” to this day. The main theme of this work is the social aspects of technocracy. But if the essence of the novel is understandable and clear, then its name remains in question. What is meant by the mysterious "We"?
So, let's turn to the story. 1920 is the time when the ideas of national equality and socialism dominated. The cult of collective consciousness prevailed over individualism, in other words, people sought to unite, to unite into a single whole, and not stand out. We see the same thing on the pages of Zamyatin’s novel. No hero has a name - only a number. They wear exclusively the same clothes, hairstyle, have the same views and thoughts. It is amazing that they live in front of everyone, in a glass cage. By this, the author emphasizes that people have nothing to be ashamed of, hide or be shy. “We” is the personification of a single, identical monolith into which the people have turned. All are parts of one big machine. Citizens are bound by a common goal - the creation of Integral. Each hero abandoned all the joys of life in favor of a great plan - the integration of the universe.
“We” are a faceless gray mass, accustomed to living according to the established laws. They like to be in this sterile and ideal world. What happens to the main character, D - 503, when he finds in himself love, fantasy, jealousy? What happens to his "I"? Society cannot accept this “exception”, because it does not like when someone stands out from the others. All attempts of D - 503 to keep this individuality in themselves are futile ... After the operation "I" again turns into "We."
So, the title of the novel contains the main fear of the author - a uniform and enslaved society that lives in the established order in a sterile world. They have no "I". There is only “We” - the details of one mechanism.
